STOP DATA per the Racial and Identity Profiling Act 

California AB 953, the Racial and Identity Profiling Act (RIPA), mandates all state and local law enforcement agencies to collect and report detailed information about every person detained and/or searched by police.

AB 953 requires:

  • The Santa Cruz Police Department shares the collected data with the California Department of Justice (DOJ).
  • Data collection for all contacts is defined as any detention by a peace officer of a person or any peace officer interaction with a person in which the officer conducts a search.
  • The collection of data for vehicle stops, pedestrian stops, and other detentions that occur while responding to calls for service and performing other duties.

Data collected includes:

  • The perceived race or ethnicity of the person contacted.
  • Gender
  • Approximate age
  • The reason for the contact
  • Resulting post-contact outcomes
