Santa Cruz Symphony - Frates

We open the concert with Arvo Pärt's most famous composition, the mesmerizing and achingly beautiful Fratres.

Haydn's Cello Concerto No. 2 in D Major follows, in which we continue our long history of collaborating with the Irving M. Klein International String Competition by featuring their 2015 grand prize winner, young virtuoso cellist Oliver Herbert.

The heart of this program is Schubert's searingly dramatic masterpiece, Death and the Maiden. Schubert's most famous string quartet takes its title from the theme of the second movement; a theme which Schubert took from one of his earlier songs of the same name: Der Tod und das Mädchen. Our performances will feature Gustav Mahler's famous arrangement for string orchestra.
