CORE Coffee Chat: Community Meeting on Tobacco Product Waste
In 2019, the Santa Cruz City Council joined jurisdictions across the country by adopting a Health in All Policies (HiAP) approach to support community health and well-being across different departments and systems. In our next CORE Coffee Chat, we’ll explore the pros and cons of policies addressing an issue that affects public health, equity, and sustainability: the waste created by tobacco products.
This particular issue, like many policies under the umbrella of HiAP approaches, highlights many conditions at once, using the lens of systems and policies. In particular, it combines a focus on a public health issue (the adverse effects of tobacco use) as well as an environmental one, with many tobacco products such as vape cartridges, cigarette butts, and packaging showing up in parks and beaches as hazardous litter. Like other problems targeted by HiAP approaches, this particular topic raises equity questions as well, including who is most impacted by the adverse health effects of tobacco and which neighborhoods are most affected by tobacco waste.
Join your hosts, Nicole Young and Nicole Lezin, on Tuesday, March 7 from 10:00 – 11:15 a.m. for a CORE Coffee Chat jointly sponsored with the City of Santa Cruz HiAP team, to learn more about policy options for addressing tobacco product waste and to share your questions and opinions about their pros and cons. We’ll hear from Tara Leonard, MPH, a health educator leading the Health Services Agency’s Tobacco Education and Prevention program; Em Nguyen, Principal Management Analyst with the City of Santa Cruz; and Tiffany Wise-West, PhD, the City’s Sustainability and Climate Action Manager and lead for the HiAP initiative. Then we’ll have a chance to break into small groups for a deeper dive into the policies being considered.
