The Museum of Art and History (MAH) presents a 3rd Friday event on Cooper Street adjacent to Abbott's Square.

Civil Rights. Free Speech. Psychedelic Rock. Pop Art. Hippie Communes. The social and artistic forces that swirled through the 60’s and 70’s will come to life at Counter Culture 3rd Friday through performances, exhibitions, and hands-on workshops:

LIVE PERFORMANCES IN ABBOTT SQUARE: 

Matt Hartle and members of The China Cats, playing electric Grateful Dead music.

Eric Levin and Holly Harman singin’ songs from the 60’s with acoustic guitar and harmonica.

ART CARS IN COOPER STREET:

Cooper Street will close down to traffic from 5-9pm and host a showing of vintage VW Buses and Art Cars.

DROP-IN WORKSHOPS AND INTERACTIVE EXPERIENCES:

Pop Art Prints: How does mass media affect art? Is there a difference between fine art and pop culture? Explore these ideas and more with an Andy Warhol inspired Pop Art Printmaking activity.

Counter Culture Fashion: People have used fashion, hair, and makeup to express cultural shifts and revolution throughout time. Discover and even become part of Counter Cultural Fashion movements with hair and makeup styling from The Cosmo Factory Cosmetology Academy.

Making God’s Eyes: Learn how to make a God’s Eye with artist Micah Langton from Glass Paper Scissor. The Ojo de Dios (Eye of God in Spanish) is an ancient weaving craft, made from sticks and colorful yarn. Making God’s Eyes was a spiritual practice for many indigenous peoples in the Americas, and became popular in the 60’s and 70’s among the Counter Culture.

Grateful Dead Envelope Art: Explore and make Grateful Dead Envelope Art with UCSC Grateful Dead Archivist Nicholas Meriwether. This activity complements our current exhibition, Dear Jerry. 

Coloring with Holly Harman: Writer and Historian Holly Harman published a book on Hippie Communes…but she also makes coloring books for all ages. Learn about Hippie Communes in Santa Cruz from Holly, while coloring away with her original drawings.

Readymades: What can and can’t be art? Who gets to say? Turn everyday objects into sculptures that can redefine the boundaries of art and culture. Dada artist Marcel Duchamp coined the term Readymades and said “An ordinary object can be elevated to the dignity of a work of art by the mere choice of an artist.”

Peace Flags: Many tried to fight wars and social struggles with peace and love. Make peace flags and patches to share peace messages with the world.

Bra Bonfire: Ignite your thoughts on Feminism- historical to contemporary- by making, “burning,” and displaying paper bras.
