Nature Walk at Loch Lomond Recreation Area

Native Plants of Newell Creek Watershed

  • Date: 05/28/2016 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM
  • Location: Loch Lomond Recreation Area

This month’s nature hike at Loch Lomond Recreation Area will feature noted botanist Andy Werner, who will discuss native plant species found in the Newell Creek watershed. The walk will take place this Saturday, May 30, from 10:00a.m. – 12:00p.m.

Mr. Werner has over forty years of experience in landscape design, landscape maintenance, erosion control, native plant identification and restoration, and noxious weed mapping. He is currently the City of Santa Cruz Water Department’s botanist, assisting with habitat conservation planning, fire preparedness, and invasive species management. Mr. Werner also leads walks for the California Native Plant Society in his spare time.

In addition to native plant species, park rangers will provide information on water system operations and watershed lands management. The monthly “Loch Walks” are included in the entry fee for the Recreation Area. There is a $6.00 charge per vehicle for entrance to the park. Walk participants are encouraged to dress for variable weather conditions and to wear proper footwear for hiking on dirt trails and for changes in elevation.

The Loch Lomond Recreation Area is a 180 acre reservoir and part of the 2,800 acre watershed land holdings that the City of Santa Cruz Water Department manages in the Newell Creek watershed. It has been closed the past two seasons due to the drought. The park was opened on schedule on March 1 this year, due to the high level of the reservoir. Loch Lomond serves as the City’s only drinking water reservoir.
