RECREATION LEADER II/RECREATION LEADER III (Temporary)
REPORTS TO: Recreation Leader IV (Site Supervisor), Recreation Assistant & Recreation Supervisor
PAY RANGE: Recreation II: $18.2640 per hour starting, Recreation III: $20.0904 per hour starting
HOURS: 8-12 hours per week, hiring for year-round employment. Additional hours available.
SHIFTS: Shifts vary based on facility hours, noon-time programs and special programming.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE: Recreation II: Two (2) years of volunteer or paid experience working with children in a recreation, education or similar setting. Experience working with teens preferred. Must have experience working with youth.
Recreation III: Two (2) years of paid experience working with teens in a recreation, education or similar setting. Must have experience working with teens.

JOB DESCRIPTION: Provide programming activities and teen mentorship for the Santa Cruz Teen Center. Under supervision aids in organization, implementation, and supervision of activities, programs, and special events at the Teen Center located at the London Nelson Community Center at 301 Center Street and at two local middle schools.
JOB REQUIREMENTS – RECREATION II:
- Working knowledge of recreation programs, services and activities (and their appropriateness) for teens; strong interest in working with teens and young adults.
- The ability to interact effectively and tactfully with a wide variety of individuals
- Respond calmly and effectively to spontaneous and/or emergency situations.
- Ability to work with teens & co-workers from diverse socio-economic and cultural backgrounds.
- Ability to explain and enforce program and facility guidelines, policies, and procedures.
- Flexibility and willingness to work irregular hours including evenings, weekends and holidays.
- Strong communication skills. Ability to understand and give verbal and written instructions.
- Independently initiate and complete work activities.
- Effectively motivate and supervise a number of teens at one time.
JOB REQUIREMENTS – RECREATION III:
In addition to Recreation II tasks;
- Oversees the facility when the Site Supervisor is occupied
- Plans a weekly activity for Teen Center members
- The ability & proficiency to supervise teens on excursions outside of the Teen Center
JOB REQUIREMENTS – ALL STAFF
- Must attend evening staff meetings
- Must maintain neat appearance, and wear program uniform and closed toed shoes while working.
- Clearance on fingerprinting of all employees is required before work begins.
TYPICAL DUTIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
- Provides supervision for program participants
- Assists in planning and implementing activities at the Teen Center and at local middle schools
- Prepares documents such as event flyers, program evaluation forms, publicity, permission slips etc.
- Supervises the maintenance of equipment, supplies, and facility

- Completes department forms and reports as needed.
- Acts as cashier and may make deposits when required.
EDUCATION:
- High school diploma or equivalent and 2 years of college experience.
- Recreation, P.E. or Education/Child Development course work desired.
REQUIRED LICENSES/TRAINING:
- Possession and maintenance of current certification in Adult/Child/Infant CPR and First Aid
- Proof of negative tuberculosis test or clear chest X-ray results.
OTHER HELPFUL SKILLS (not required):
- Spanish speaker strongly desired & compensated
- Experience or knowledge of substance abuse issues in the youth & teen community (i.e. illegal drugs and alcohol)
- Experience or knowledge of violence prevention issues in the youth & teen community
- Familiarity with local community organizations and resources
