SANTA CRUZ, Calif. — The City of Santa Cruz welcomes the community to celebrate the groundbreaking of Coastal Rail Trail Segment 7/Phase II on Thursday, Aug. 11, 12:15 -12:45 p.m. at La Barranca Park, 700 Bay Street, near the intersection of California Avenue.
Santa Cruz Mayor Sonja Brunner will preside at the event. Speakers include Santa Cruz County Regional Commission Chair and City Councilmember Sandy Brown, Bayview Elementary School Principal and City Councilmember Renee Golder, California Transportation Commission Active Transportation Plan Project Manager Laurie Waters, Santa Cruz County Supervisor Ryan Coonerty, Former U.S. Congressman Sam Farr, and City of Santa Cruz Public Works Assistant Director/City Engineer Nathan Nguyen.
Free bike valet service is offered courtesy of Bike Santa Cruz County. If street vehicle parking is not available, attendees may park free of charge at the United Methodist Church, 250 California St.
The Coastal Rail Trail Segment 7/Phase II Project is a paved multi-use trail that will run 0.8 miles from Bay and California streets to Pacific Avenue and is part of the Santa Cruz County Regional Transportation Commission’s Monterey Bay Sanctuary Scenic Trail Network Master Plan.
When the Segment 7/Phase II Project is completed, there will be two miles of Coastal Rail Trail in Santa Cruz from Natural Bridges Drive to Pacific Avenue connecting over 30,000 residents who live within one mile of the trail to schools, work, beaches, shopping and other activity centers.

Construction started on Monday, July 25. The public is advised that there is heavy truck traffic entering and exiting the construction site at California and Bay streets for the duration of the project during weekday hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (There will be no such traffic during the groundbreaking ceremony.)
