Background

The West Cliff Drive Adaptation and Management Plan: a Public Works Plan was adopted by City Council on April 27, 2021. The City is taking the Plan and the Local Coastal Program Amendment to the California Coastal Commission for approval in early 2023. The City is currently implementing projects in the West Cliff Drive Plan including developing a coastal change monitoring program. Check this page for updates on coastal resilience.

50-Year Community Vision for West Cliff 

The City of Santa Cruz's 50-year community vision for West Cliff is a long-term plan that envisions a resilient, accessible, and sustainable future for one of the city’s most cherished coastal areas. This vision aims to preserve the natural beauty of West Cliff while accommodating the challenges posed by climate change such as severe winter storms, erosion, and sea-level rise.

It is distinct from the West Cliff Drive Adaptation and Management Plan, which is a more immediate and tactical approach focusing on near-term strategies to address current issues such as infrastructure damage and public safety. The 50-year vision is broader, providing a framework for the long-term transformation and stewardship of West Cliff.
