UNSOLVED HOMICIDE Case:  17S-08027

Victim:      Samuel Isaias Marroquin, 36 years old

Date:         October 2, 2017

Location:  San Lorenzo River Levee and the Broadway Bridge

On October 2, 2017, at approximately 10:18 PM, Santa Cruz Police officers were flagged down in the area of the San Lorenzo River Levee and the Broadway Bridge for the report of a man down.  Santa Cruz Police officers located an unconscious and unknown Hispanic male victim with several apparent gunshot wounds.   Officers and the Santa Cruz Fire Department attempted to render  medical treatment, however the victim succumbed to his injuries.

Subsequent investigation revealed that this man was the victim of a homicide.  He was identified as Samuel Isaias Marroquin, a 36 years old Santa Cruz County resident. This case is ongoing, and a motive for the crime is still unclear.

Victim:               John Doe, white male 25-35 years of age, 150 lbs.
Date:                  October 6, 1982
Location:           Natural Bridges State Park

 On October 6, 1982 at approximately 4:30 PM a hiker located an unidentified body on an embankment above Moore Creek outlet with in Natural Bridges State Park.

Subsequent investigations by the Santa Cruz Police Department and the Santa Cruz County Sheriff – Coroner’s Office have generated no leads as to the identity of the victim. An examination of the body did reveal evidence that the victim’s death was the result of a probable homicide. The victim is believed to be a white male adult 5’6” to 5’8”, 150lbs with brown/blond hair.

The victim had a tattoo of a red rose with three green leaves on his left forearm, and a tattoo of an Indian skull on his right forearm. The tips of the feathers and the eye sockets on the skull tattoo are red in color; the remainder of the tattoo is done in black ink.

Victim:                  Miguel Delgado Mendoza, 31 years old

Date:                     January 01, 2002 at 8:43 AM

Location:              San Lorenzo Blvd between Bixby Street and Canfield Street

On January 1, 2002 at approximately 8:43 AM, the Santa Cruz Police Department responded to a “man down” on San Lorenzo Bl near Bixby St. with in the City of Santa Cruz.

Upon the arrival of Santa Cruz City Fire Department and the Santa Cruz Police Department they discovered one body of a male subject lying face down. The male subject was deceased and subsequent investigation revealed that this man was the victim of a homicide.

The victim was identified as Miguel Delgado Mendoza, 31 years of age, a Santa Cruz resident.

Based on the time and location of this incident, we believe that there are more witnesses who have not come forward or been identified.

Victim:                 Valdemar Victor Martinez, 19 years old

Date:                    01/01/1998 at 12:46 AM

Location:             200 Block of Walk Circle.

On January 1, 1998 at approximately 12:46 AM, the Santa Cruz Police Department responded to a stabbing in the 200 Block of Walk Circle within the City of Santa Cruz.

Upon the arrival officers located one victim who was transported to Dominican Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

The victim was identified as Valdemar Martinez, 19 years of age, a Santa Cruz resident.

Based on the time and location of this incident, we believe there are more witnesses who have not come forward or been identified.

Wanted Outstanding Suspect for Murder

Victim 1:              Barbara Sue Prowdley, a white female, 38 years old.

Victim 2:              Rogelio Lazaro Conejo, a Hispanic male, 23 years old.

Date:                    02/21/1989

Location:             100 Block of Leibrandt Street, Santa Cruz

On February 21st, 1989, at approximately 3:49 p.m., officers from the Santa Cruz Police Department responded to the 100 block of Leibrandt Street, regarding a report of two dead bodies.  Apartment employees, a handyman, and the assistant manager met with responding officers and described the following. 

While trying to locate the property manager, the employees found the manger’s door unlocked. Inside they discovered two victims deceased lying in bed side by side. There was no sign of forced entry to the apartment complex.

Subsequent investigation confirmed that the deceased, Barbara Sue Prowdley and Rogelio Lazaro Conejo, were victims of homicide.  Francisco Amador Varela is the suspect who committed the murders.

Victim:                 Kori Joanne Lamaster, 17 years of age

Date:                    01/29/1994

Location:             Pogonip Park

On January 29, 1994 at approximately 1:54 PM the Santa Cruz Police Department responded to a remote area of Pogonip Park where a badly decomposed body of a female had been located by hikers.

For nearly 20 years this unknown young female victim was not identified. This case was dubbed “Pogonip Jane”.

In December of 2013 the identification was finally confirmed. Our victim was identified as Kori Joanne Lamaster. Kori was 17 years old at the time of her death.

Unfortunately, the story did not end with her identification. The Santa Cruz Police Department still has a cold homicide case.

Victim:                 Carl Reimer, 19 years of age

Date:                  04/24/2010

Location:            90 Block of Grandview Street

On April 24, 2010 at approximately 12:02AM, Officers of the Santa Cruz Police Department were dispatched to the area of 90 Grandview for the report of a shooting.  Officers arriving on scene were directed to the 19 year-old male victim, Carl Reimer, who had been shot. The victim was treated at the scene by emergency medical personnel and then transported to an out-of-county trauma center. At approximately 6:45 AM the victim succumbed to his injuries.

It was determined that the victim was confronted by the suspect while walking with a friend through a common area/park in the 90 Block of Grandview Street. There was a brief conversation between the suspect and the victim after which the suspect began firing a firearm at the victim. The suspect was last seen fleeing east on Grandview Street toward Mission St.

 Victim:                 Derek Kyle Snell, 20 years of age

Date:                  May 30, 2003 at approximately 2100 hours

Location:             300 block of Raymond Street

On 05/30/2003 at approximately 2100 hours Santa Cruz Police responded to a report of a victim of a battery. On scene Santa Cruz Police found Derek Snell unresponsive and suffering from multiple stab wounds. Snell later died from his injuries. It is believed Snell was stabbed by multiple individuals who were attending a party near the beach on Memorial Day Weekend.

The California Governor’s Reward program is offering a $50,000 reward in this case.

Victim:                Carol Ann Panzica, 39 years of age.

Date:                  August 12, 1984

Location:             Beachfront Hotel, Santa Cruz, CA

The victim had checked into a beachfront hotel with her two sons, ages of eleven and thirteen years at the time. The boys went to the beach to play while the victim stayed behind to bathe. The two boys returned to the room and found their mother, the victim, face down in the tub of water.

The Santa Cruz Sheriff’s Pathologist examined the victim and noticed bruises. These bruises where found to be inconsistent with an accidental death. Therefore this case was up-graded to a homicide.

Victim:                 Deborah Jean Cargill, 19 years of age.  

Date:                   December 22, 1975

Location:             San Lorenzo River near the train trestle

The victim, Deborah Jean Cargill, lived in Campbell, CA. She was 19 years old at the time she was kidnapped and killed.  On 12/21/1975 at approximately 4:30PM just as she was parking her vehicle in the parking lot of the Albertsons grocery store, located at Hwy 9 and Bollinger in the City of San Jose, (where she worked) she was contacted and led away by an unknown male suspect.  San Jose Police Department kidnapping case number is 75-252569.

Her body was found on 12/22/1975 in the San Lorenzo River near the train trestle and the beach within the City of Santa Cruz, CA.

Victim:             Pauly Reyes Silva, 32 years old.

Date:               February 9, 2013 at 12:30 AM

Location:         200 Block of Locust Street

On February 9, 2013 at approximately 12:30 AM, the Santa Cruz Police Department responded to a shooting in the 200 Block of Locust Street.  Officers arrived to find a 32 year old male victim deceased from multiple gunshot wounds.  The victim was identified as Pauly Reyes Silva, a Santa Cruz resident.  Based on the time and location of this incident, we believe there are more witnesses who have not come forward or been identified

Victim:             Daniel Alfredo Marquez, 27 years of age.

Date:               August 21, 2005

Location:         100 Block of Sycamore Street

On the evening of August 21, 2005 at approximately 11:05PM a male and female were shot by an unknown gunman while they were seated in a vehicle in the parking lot of an apartment complex located in the 100 Block of Sycamore St.

The male victim, Daniel Marquez, was shot multiple times. He died from the gunshot wounds while in surgery.  The female victim was treated and recovered for a single gunshot wound to her shoulder.

Victim:             Michael Bebek, 44 years of age.

Date:               January 11, 1988

Location:         1000 Block of King St., Santa Cruz, CA.

On January 11, 1988 at 5:38 PM Santa Cruz Police Officers responded to the call of a deceased male at a resident in the 1000 block of King Street. Subsequent investigation by both the Santa Cruz Police Department and the Santa Cruz County Sheriff Coroner’s Office showed that the deceased male was the victim of a homicide.

The victim, who had been identified as Michael Dennis Bebek, had not been seen for several days. A neighbor who had become concerned with Mr. Bebek’s welfare entered Bebek’s home and found him lying on his bed deceased.

Wanted Outstanding Suspects for Murder

Victim:             Tyler Tenorio, 17 years of age.

Date:               October 16, 2009

 Location:         Laurel St. @ Chestnut St.

On October 16, 2009 at approximately 10:00PM the Santa Cruz Police Department was dispatched to the corner of Laurel St. and Chestnut St. for a reported stabbing. Arriving Officers located the victim who had multiple stab wounds. Once emergency medical personnel arrived on scene and after attempting to render aid to the victim he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Subsequent investigation revealed that a brief fight had occurred between two groups of male subjects. Once the fight and crowd had dispersed, the victim laid on the ground with multiple stab wounds. SCPD Investigators also determined through witness statements that five subjects had been seen kicking and stabbing the victim as he lay on the ground.

Of the five suspects’ three have been arrested.

The two below listed suspects are still outstanding in the homicide of Tyler Tenorio.
