Welcome to the City of Santa Cruz Active Transportation Plan
The Active Transportation Plan was accepted by the Santa Cruz City Council on February 28, 2017.
Active Transportation refers to human forms of transportation—in particular, walking and bicycling. The Active Transportation Plan identifies an integrated network of walkways and bikeways that connect the City of Santa Cruz neighborhoods and communities to employment, recreation, education and destinations that meet their daily needs. This helps the City to achieve the goals and policies set forth in the General Plan 2030 and Climate Action Plan to improve multimodal mobility, increase safety for people walking and biking, and increase the number of people using non-auto forms of travel.
The plan develops and prioritizes a list of bicycle and pedestrian projects that, when fully implemented, will increase active transportation opportunities and make it safer and more convenient for people to walk and bike in the City of Santa Cruz. This Planning process allows the City to better align infrastructure investment with community based projects.
Why does the City of Santa Cruz need an Active Transportation Plan?
The City needs an Active Transportation Plan because all modes of transportation are valuable.
Cycling and walking for recreation, errands, school and commuting in the City of Santa Cruz are growing in popularity. We need to coordinate previous plans and future projects to ensure development of a cohesive active transportation system throughout the City.
Development of an active transportation strategy and the prioritization of active transportation projects helps position the City for future grant opportunities and funding for infrastructure improvements. It also helps us to achieve our General Plan and Climate Action Plan goals.
The Active Transportation Plan is an important step to increase walking, biking and non-motorized opportunities throughout the City of Santa Cruz and increase safety, mobility, connectivity and access for all roadway users.
