Home MenuReading Your Water Meter
In addition to the WaterSmart customer portal, your water meter is one of your best tool for understanding and monitoring your water use. Here are the basics....
- Your water meter tracks water in cubic feet (cu. ft.). This is a common unit used to measure volumes of water.
- One cubic foot of water is equal to 7.48 gallons.
- You are charged for every 100 cu. ft. of water that you use. 100 cubic feet is referred to as 1 CCF (Centum cubic feet) on your bill.
- 1 CCF = 100 cu. ft. = 748 gallons of water.
Now that you know the basics, it's time to open up your meter box! Meter boxes are usually located in front of your house in the sidewalk. Sometimes they can be located in your front yard, and occasionally they are covered by plants or dirt.
Once you find your meter box, you will need to open it. Carefully remove the lid with a tool like a screwdriver and set it aside.
There are four common meters in our service area. Click on the image that matches your meter to be taken to the correct instructions.
The two digital meters cycle through 4-5 different screens with different information, including the total read, the active flow screen, the temperature, alarms, and the firmware. Opening and closing the meter will flip through these screens.
*The digital meters show the code "Er.020.020.A" when there is continuous water use (a potential leak). This is not an indication of a malfunctioning meter*
Logging your reads
You can log your meter reads and track your usage using a simple chart. Use the one below, or make your own.
Start with your most recent bill to fill in your first date and meter read. This can be found in the bottom left corner of your bill. Below is an example of what it will look like.
